Every year Polish posters get greater public recognition and we have more people stop at the booth and we do more business, especially among young families and a more sophisticated group of 'lookers'.  A feature in our booth this year was the playing of the documentary 'Freedom on the Fence - the story of the Polish School of Posters'.  The dvd has not yet been released.  It interviews Polish artists in Poland and in the U.S. and gives the history of posters from WWII to the present - very interesting!

Ylain G. Mayer & Chaz German at the Contemporary Posters booth. There was a great deal of interest in the signed & especially the censored CYRK posters. The censored posters were featured for the first time. Under Communism, before 1989, all posters had to be approved by a censor for content. Censored posters showed quantity printed, city, poster number, date, & signature of the censor. Censored posters have historical value as well as artistic value.

Special tribute was also made to Henryk Tomaszewski (1914-2005) 'the father of the Polish School of Posters.' (note: clown poster in center of booth & "X" poster in bottom right corner.

Chaz German & his lovely wife, Patti, in front of Poland's only 2 posters that were made into postage stamps - W. Swierzy's 1970 'Clown face with derby' (#186) in 1992 & M. Urbaniec's 1970 'Mona Lisa' (#207) in 2003.Poster at far left is H. Hilscher's 1965 'The juggler' (#030c) which appeared in the movie 'What Women Want' (Mel Gibson/Helen Hunt). The poster also has hand-written censor's marks made by the government censor who had to approve all posters under Communism. The poster is appreciated for its historic value as well as its beauty. (Other posters with censor's marks are available - click for details)
Beside CYRK posters, jazz, film, theater, opera, and Jewish posters were displayed. W. Swierzy's hand-signed Humphrey Bogart film poster was an immediate seller, as was his 1974 Jimi Hendrix (#1000) jazz poster.
